Because blood moves quickly during dialysis, even a small shift in a needle or dressing can become serious if it\u00a0isn't\u00a0seen right away.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 aria-level=\"3\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Know Your Dialysis Access Type<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Fistula (AV fistula)<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: A connection between an artery and a vein, usually created in your arm.\u00a0It lasts the longest, carries the lowest infection risk, and offers the best blood flow for dialysis, but it can take several weeks to mature before\u00a0it's\u00a0ready to use.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Graft (AV graft)<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: A synthetic tube surgically implanted to connect an artery to a vein when a fistula\u00a0isn't\u00a0an option.\u00a0It's\u00a0ready sooner than a fistula and works well for weaker veins, though it carries a higher risk of infection and clotting.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Catheter (central venous catheter, or CVC)<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:\u00a0A thin, flexible tube inserted into a large vein, usually in the neck, chest, or\u00a0groin,\u00a0that's\u00a0ready for immediate use.\u00a0It's\u00a0typically a short-term solution, with a higher infection risk and lifestyle limits like avoiding showering or swimming while\u00a0it's\u00a0in place.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Whichever type you have, one thing is true for all three: keeping it visible during treatment is one of the most important things you and your care team can do to keep you safe.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 aria-level=\"3\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Why Visibility Matters<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"\"> in Dialysis<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When your access is covered, early warning signs can be missed.
