The Transformative Power of AI in Dialysis

Dialysis, a life-sustaining treatment for millions with kidney failure, is at a turning point. With CMS mandating that all its Medicare beneficiaries are in a value-based care relationship by 20301, providers are under more pressure than ever to deliver better outcomes while managing costs.

Yet, dialysis patients face high rates of hospitalization and mortality. Complications like infections at access sites as well as difficulties in managing diet and fluid intake remain prevalent risks.

Comprehensive strategies that address prevention, early detection, and accessible treatment options are essential to mitigate this pervasive health challenge.2 It is the need for innovation to reduce risks, further enable personalized care and improve access to quality treatment that has opened the door for AI.

According to predictions about AI’s potential in renal care, “the combination of technology, patient-specific data, and AI will contribute to creating a more personalized and interactive dialysis process, improving patients’ quality of life.”3  Innovative Renal Care’s InnovAItive™ platform is demonstrating AIs impact on patient care today. The deep learning and AI-powered technology is designed to complement our novel clinical approaches to help care teams act earlier, plan smarter, and stay ahead of avoidable complications.

Here are just a few ways AI helps us drive exceptional outcomes and deliver more tomorrows to our patients:

  • Identify potential health events and comorbidities
  • Enable timely interventions
  • Reduce hospitalizations
  • Reduce fluid overload
  • Recommend changes in medication
  • Enhance and further personalize visits and treatment plans

We are also integrating AI with remote monitoring technologies, allowing care teams to oversee home dialysis patients from a distance. With more visibility into home treatments, we can further improve outcomes for those patients receiving dialysis at home, which is an option that offers greater flexibility and independence to patients, especially those in rural areas.

Integrating AI to support real-time treatment decisions helps us tailor our dialysis services to be truly patient-centered, efficient, and capable of delivering improved quality of life.
