5-Star Dialysis Care Makes Vail Valley Ski Trip Possible

Jeff Miller

Jeff Miller

I appreciate all of the usual pleasures of a trip to Vail. Great skiing. Amazing scenery. The pleasures of being on vacation. But I have an important addition to these pleasures: being able to ski Vail makes me feel perfectly healthy, which is not exactly the case.

I am on dialysis. I had open-heart surgery two years ago. And I have prostate cancer. None of that matters when I am skiing down Blue Ox, Gandy Dancer, or in the Back Bowls. All of the problems fade away. And you would never suspect that I am dealing with any of those health issues.

I am a lifelong skier. I have also lived with kidney disease for 42 years. Through countless complications and two transplants, both of which lasted about nine years, I have made every effort to be active and fight back to good health as much as possible.

The pleasures that come with skiing Vail were not possible before the Kidney Center of the Rockies opened in Avon. Prior to that, there were no dialysis centers between the Denver area and Grand Junction. I was one of the first travel patients to be treated at the facility, and I have been coming back regularly over the years. It has been an important part of feeling healthy in the face of all of the challenges.

The team at the Kidney Center of the Rockies—Dr. Daniel Andreoli, Karen Roesenberg, Wanda Trudeau, David Barnett, Andrea Messier, Heidi Duenas Rojas, Jennifer Dixon, and Kelli Schertz—has made every visit feel like coming home. They are exceptional at what they do. And they care. You can feel it from the moment you walk in. The center is nestled at the base of Beaver Creek. The chairs face the mountains. I sit there during treatment and look out at those peaks, and I think about where I am going to ski when it is over. That is not something I take for granted. Not for a single session.

For anyone out there living with kidney disease who thinks their best days are behind them, they are not. Find the right team. Find the right center. And get back out there.
