How to Change Dialysis Centers

Have you ever wondered what your dialysis experience could look like somewhere else? Many patients ask, can I change my dialysis clinic? Whether you are moving, traveling, or simply curious about your options, knowing how to switch dialysis centers is valuable information every patient should have.

The good news is that dialysis patients have more options than they may realize. From a temporary move to a permanent change, understanding the process of switching centers can open the door to a better overall experience. And a better experience can make a real difference in your day-to-day life.

Your Dialysis Experience

Dialysis treatment is more than just needles and machines. The experience surrounding your care can vary greatly from center to center. From the moment you walk through the door, the environment, the staff, and the level of communication you receive all play a role in how you feel, not just physically, but emotionally and mentally too.

At Innovative Renal Care, we understand that learning you need dialysis is a pivotal moment in your life. Our commitment extends beyond the treatment itself because we care for the whole person. That means supporting your physical, emotional, and overall well-being every step of the way.

Proven Patient Experience and Quality from CMS

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) rates every dialysis center in the country on a scale of 1 to 5 stars, measuring both quality of patient care and patient experience. A 3-Star rating represents the national average, while a 5-Star rating means a center is performing well above average compared to dialysis facilities across the country. These ratings give patients a transparent and reliable way to compare their options.

The 2026 CMS Dialysis Facility ratings have been released, and IRC demonstrated measurable and sustained improvement across both quality and patient experience. This year, 21 IRC dialysis centers earned 5-Star Quality ratings, and 73% of IRC centers achieved 4- or 5-Star Quality ratings. IRC continues to outperform national averages, earning recognition for superior clinical outcomes and exceptional patient experiences. In patient experience specifically, IRC remains the only national provider achieving an overall score above 4-Star, with more than 47% of our centers performing at a 5-Star level for patient experience compared to other large dialysis organizations.

How to Take the Next Step

If you have decided that transferring to an IRC dialysis center is right for you, the process is probably simpler than you may realize. Whether you are moving to a new city, exploring your options while traveling, or simply ready for a better experience, the steps below can help guide you through the transition with confidence.

  1. Do Your Research: Exploring your dialysis options and gathering information is the first step. Searching for a dialysis center near me is a great place to begin.
  2. Visit the New Center: How long is the drive to the center? Does the treatment schedule work with your schedule? Visiting in person helps you determine if the center is the right fit.
  3. Talk to Your Nephrologist: Let your kidney doctor know you are considering a transfer to ensure your care continues without interruption.
  4. Your New Center Will Request Your Medical Records: Your new center handles the coordination with your current facility, making the transition seamless.
  5. Start Treatment: Your new care team will welcome you and get you started.

Things to Consider When Making a Switch

Switching dialysis centers is a straightforward process, but transportation and your nephrologist’s relationship with the treatment center should be part of your evaluation.

  • Transportation: If you rely on transportation assistance, make sure your provider can accommodate the new location. Taking the time to think through the logistics upfront can make the transition much smoother.
  • Nephrologist: Some kidney doctors work exclusively with certain dialysis centers, so it is worth having that conversation early in the process. Understanding your nephrologist’s affiliations ahead of time helps ensure a smooth and uninterrupted care experience from day one.
